How To Win Customers Without Spending A Dollar On Ads

When I was 19 years old, I was a first-time entrepreneur running a fast-growing company that sold golf clubs on the internet. I had never taken a business class in college and only knew a little about marketing from trial and error. I was getting a lot of customers through Facebook ads but didn't know any other ways to bring customers to my site.

So, I typed into Google “how to get potential customers to my website” and stumbled upon content marketing. Content marketing means creating and sharing materials, such as blogs, videos and social media posts, that don’t promote a particular brand but intend to get people interested in certain products and services.

I quickly learned that if I could create content that targeted what people were already searching on Google by writing articles around specific keywords, then I could get more traffic for my little website. Later, I learned about live chat, which is like having a live sales rep in a store to greet potential customers. By combining content marketing and live chat on your website, you can gain customers virtually for free. Below, I break down how to build a sales machine:


1. Make a list of what your target customers are searching.

The first step is to figure out what your target customers are searching on Google. Google Suggest is a free tool that you can use by typing in your product or service and seeing what people are searching. Another way to figure out relevant search terms is by looking at Google's “searches related to” at the bottom of the search page for your keyword. You can also use SimilarWeb or SEMrush, competitor analysis tools that tell you what your competitors are trying to rank for on Google.

2. Write blog posts using the keywords that your customers are searching.

After you figure out what your target customer is searching for on Google, the next step is to create content. Create blog posts about each potential search query that your target audience is looking for on Google. For example, my current company sells call center services to restaurants -- I've figured out that my target customers type in “restaurant call centers,” so I write blog posts on that topic.

3. Publish blog posts on your company website with links.

Most businesses today use WordPress, a content management system. In WordPress, it's easy to click the “add post” button to create a blog post and then “publish” to make it go live on your website. Create unique and useful content each week that targets specific search phrases. The secret sauce is linking each blog post you write to other relevant blog posts you have written. This is called linking your articles together, and it helps you build powerful backlinks. A backlink is a way to gain credibility from Google to rank higher in the search engine for that specific phrase. Simply linking back to your previous content can get you 10 times the SEO results.

4. Leverage social media and get backlinks.

Your business should have social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Medium, LinkedIn and Reddit. Once you publish an article on your website, post a link to the blog post on your social media accounts. When someone likes or shares that post, it creates a backlink, which tells Google that your content is good and it should rank you higher in search.

5. Start generating leads and sales with live chat.

After doing this process week after week, you should start to see a lot more traffic to your website. Now it's time to generate leads and start acquiring customers. One of the best ways to do this is to implement live chat on your website. Live chat is a tool that you can use for customer service and sales. I recommend Intercom, LiveChat Software and Olark.

If you stick to this process, you should quickly see results. Set a goal of 90 days to start rapidly moving up in search engines.
